The online training and webinar is the first part of a series of three webinars which focus on mapping and remote sensing data interpretation. The first online training and webinar in 2021 was organized by the Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Science (IGRAS), with technical support from the National Research University “Higher School of Economics” (HSE University).
The first online training and webinar (on Zoom platform) was conducted on 15-16 September 2021 (Part #1) and 27-28 September 2021(Part #2). It introduced participants to the principles and tools for identifying different processes and to provide them skills for GIS-mapping and digital processing of remote sensing data.
The training was organized in the form of introductory lectures and classwork – practical sessions. The introductory lectures cover the basic methods and tools including access to data and archives. Training includes practical exercises in GIS use, digital image processing, thematic mapping and data dissemination to the public. The training also aims at consolidating the knowledge gained, discussing the results, and creating maps. All the digital materials, maps and data on the selected region was provided by organizers. Participants were asked to download at http://oda.igras.ru preparatory materials software, datasets and manuals for programs required for the two sessions.
During the four-day course, participants have learned:
- What natural processes and human activities can be indicated using digital elevation models and remote sensing data;
- Methods and tools for recognizing and mapping processes;
- How to obtain, process and applicate satellite imagery data;
How to perform real-time mapping and how to share the obtained data.
