Activity 5 – Establishing the environmental baseline

  • Baseline data collection for all the target countries (average 30 years’ time series): creation and initial processing of image time series on the base of satellite and aerial remote sensing data of different type and resolution, incl. purchasing the commercial satellite data of very high spatial resolution, georeferencing and converting of archive thematic data to digital format, acquisition of old and current land cadastral, forest inventory, census data.
  • Purchase of software licences: 4 lifetime licenses on ArcGIS Online GIS Professional for organization (web-publishing the spatial datasets and digital atlases and administration of distributed access to them) : 4 lifetime floating licenses on Agisoft Metashape (photogrammetric processing and interpretation of images, 3d spatial data generation and visualization)
  • Procurement of relevant data sets for all the target countries and case study areas including creation of base spatial data for the different scales, elaboration of structure, semantic, metadata of thematic spatial datasets, GIS layers, their integration with non-spatial datasets on environmental topics indicators listed below, conducting geospatial analysis to produce, update and visualise thematic spatial data for digital National Atlases of Environmental Changes
  • Review existing international land cover mapping products and assess national sources of information for each target country
  • Review existing international glacier inventory products and assess national sources of information for each target country including glacier change assessments
  • Identify and map biodiversity hotspots, distribution of endangered species of flora and fauna, habitats with high nature value, protected areas boundaries for each target country
  • Review existing international land degradation mapping, abandoned lands because of erosion, salinization, waterlogging and assess national sources of information for each target country
  • Review existing international forest cover mapping products, types of forests, human pressure on forest resources, forest fires and assess national sources of information for each target country
  • Ground truthing / verification to validate remote sensing data and improve spatial definition for important species
